The Hall of Fame City: Professional Football’s Birthplace

Did you know the American Professional Football Association (now known as the National Football League) was founded in Canton, OH, in 1920? It’s no wonder the city stands so prominently in the football world today.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame came into existence in 1963 after the city proved its determination to itself, the NFL, and the rest of the country. The idea for a Pro Football Hall of Fame came from an editorial campaign from the Canton Repository in 1959 claiming that there should be such a hall of fame to commemorate the history and successes of professional football. The headline read:  “PRO FOOTBALL NEEDS A HALL OF FAME AND LOGICAL SITE IS HERE.” City citizens backed up that claim heavily. The Canton Bulldogs were already a power house in the early days of professional football, and what better place to mark history for years to come than the birthplace of the NFL?

After a few years of preparation and dedication, Canton was accepted by the NFL as the site for the hall of fame. On its official day of opening, September 7, 1963, 17 enshrinees were inducted as the charter class. Visit “the Most Inspiring Place on Earth” and walk through the galleries and interactive areas to literally step through football history!
